Per Diem Averages
by State
Find your trip’s applicable rate by location and dates in GSA’s official lookup. Use Sooport’s FY2027 state averages for an informational allowance comparison—not as your reimbursement rate. Read the lookup and comparison guide.

UNDERSTAND THE NUMBERS
A benchmark. Not a reimbursement promise.
The primary figure assumes five lodging nights, three full meals-and-incidentals days, and two travel days at 75% of the daily M&IE allowance. Your actual lodging eligibility and travel-day rules may differ. A statewide average can differ substantially from the rate at your jobsite.
GSA rates are federal travel benchmarks. This tool does not imply your employer must match them. Taxes and actual hotel prices are not included.
How we calculated this
We average each county’s 12 monthly lodging rates and its 12 monthly M&IE allowances separately. Each county or Census county equivalent then receives equal weight in its state. Months also receive equal weight; this is not weighted by population, land area, or the number of days in a month.
Standard CONUS rates apply only where the official dataset lists no special county rate. Grouped counties are mapped separately. Reviewed cross-state areas and independent cities are matched to their Census county equivalents. In reviewed split-rate counties, distinct applicable GSA rate areas are averaged equally to produce one county benchmark. Each county still has equal weight in the state. These results are labeled estimates; they are not weighted by land area or population. Connecticut uses its eight historical counties from the 2020 Census, matching GSA’s rate definitions. We never average only the convenient subset of counties.
Standard daily benchmark = average lodging + average M&IE. Five-day benchmark = (lodging × 5) + (M&IE × 4.5). Travel-adjusted daily benchmark = five-day benchmark ÷ 5. Currency is rounded only for display.
Sources, dates, and coverage
Rates: U.S. General Services Administration FY2027 official downloadable rates. County inventory: 2026 U.S. Census Gazetteer, with the 2020 county inventory for Connecticut. Reviewed city-to-county relationships also use Census 2020 place records and local government sources. Map outlines: Census-derived US Atlas (2017 state boundaries), used for visualization only, not county calculations.
This tool covers the 48 contiguous states. Alaska and Hawaii use Department of Defense rates and are excluded from the map and selector. Washington, DC is not included as a state. The map distinguishes unavailable results from verified ones. Last successful update appears above; failed updates preserve the previous verified dataset.
How do I find the applicable GSA per diem rate?
Look up the work location and travel dates in GSA’s official per diem search. Select the fiscal year, then search by city/state or ZIP and confirm the county and rate-area notes. Check the lodging month and meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) separately. Sooport’s state averages are informational comparisons, not the rate applicable to an individual trip.
- Confirm the destination and dates. FY2027 covers October 1, 2026–September 30, 2027. A trip crossing months or fiscal years may need more than one lookup.
- Read the local result. Check the rate area and seasonal lodging limits. GSA’s rates concern federal travel in the continental US; do not substitute a statewide average for a location-specific result.
- Check the policy covering your trip. Confirm eligible nights, travel-day treatment, provided meals, taxes and required records with your employer or travel administrator. This tool does not determine an entitlement or tax treatment.
- Use Sooport for context. Choose a state and enter your daily allowance. The comparison uses the same illustrative five-day schedule for both amounts; it is not a reimbursement calculation.
Worked comparison: Nevada, FY2027
The dataset averages 17 Nevada counties/county equivalents: lodging $117.65 and M&IE $69.76. Its base daily benchmark is $187.41. The displayed travel-adjusted comparison is $180.44 per day, or $902.18 over five days.
For a hypothetical $150 daily allowance, the tool compares $750 over five days with $902.18: $30.44 less per day and $152.18 less over five days. These differences use unrounded values before display rounding. They do not establish what the employer owes.
What the average actually represents
Each county’s 12 monthly lodging rates and 12 monthly M&IE amounts are averaged separately with equal month weight. Then every county or county equivalent gets equal weight in its state. It is not weighted by population, hotel demand, land area or days per month. For reviewed split-rate counties, applicable rate areas receive equal weight within the county. Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Texas include those estimates; Connecticut uses eight historical 2020 counties to match GSA definitions and is also marked estimated.
The five-day example assumes five lodging nights, three full M&IE days and two 75% travel days: 5 × lodging + 4.5 × M&IE. Dividing by five gives lodging + 0.9 × M&IE. This is an illustrative schedule, not the usual four-night version of a five-day trip. Taxes and actual hotel prices are excluded.
Common questions
Is there an official GSA rate for an entire state?
Sooport’s figures are calculated state averages, not official statewide rates. Use GSA’s location and date lookup for a trip; a jobsite’s rate can differ substantially from this benchmark.
What areas does the map cover?
The 48 contiguous states. Washington, DC is not a state result; Alaska and Hawaii are excluded. Use the appropriate official destination lookup instead.
Can this tell me whether my allowance is legally sufficient?
No. It compares a number you enter against an informational benchmark. Applicable employment, travel and tax rules depend on your circumstances.
